The shores and decrepit villages surrounding the Salton Sea in Southern California, about an hour outside of Palm Springs, is a area I’ve explored during several visits with great enthusiasm.
According to Wikipedia, the Salton Sea is a shallow landlocked highly saline body of water in Riverside and Imperial counties at the southern end of the U.S. state of California, not far from the Mexican border.
The area offers multiple attractions to me: the California brown pelicans, an abundance of abandoned resorts, and a rare serenity that feels like I’m in the midst of an enormous set from a post-apocalyptic film like the original Mad Max. The mud in this giant lake is laced with toxic chemicals including chromium, zinc, lead, and pesticides like DDT.
