• SOFIA, BULGARIA

Photographing almost any country in eastern Europe in February is certainly a challenge. Still, I think I managed to capture at least a few of Sofia’s many beautiful and interesting sites and ambiance.

Sofia is the third oldest city in Europe. Only Athens and Rome are older. Sadly, much of the Bulgarian capital’s recent history has been impacted by a communist regime hell-bent on suppression rather than maintaining what must have been one of the world’s most beautiful cities. While still worth visiting and experiencing, Sofia of today is partially still living in the shadows of its dogmatic past with an ailing infrastructure as one of many consequences of that epoch. At the same time, I felt a lot of soul in Sofia and I would love to return one day when it’s warmer and greener.
